FULL TITLE: ‘I love you, too’: George H.W. Bush's final words to his son just before the 41st president peacefully passed away aged 94 surrounded by family in Houston

A longtime friend of George Herbert Walker Bush has painted a peaceful picture of the 41st president's final days on earth before he passed away aged 94 surrounded by family at his home in Houston, Texas.

James A Baker III, both Bush's friend and former secretary of state, told the New York Times that the 94-year-old had been fading over the last week - spending most of his time sleeping, not eating and never getting out of bed.

Baker said that although the former president had defied death multiple times over the years - struggling with a form of Parkinson's and being hospitalized with pneumonia several times in recent months - this time felt different.

Baker stopped by the Bush home on Friday to check on his old friend - or perhaps to say goodbye.

He said as soon as he entered the room, Bush perked up, asking: 'Where are we going, Bake?'

Baker answered: 'We’re going to heaven.'

'That’s where I want to go,' Bush replied.

Within 13 hours, the 94-year-old was on his way.

Friends and family flocked to Bush's bedside on Friday evening as it became clear that the end was near.

His final conversation was a speaker phone call with his son, George W. Bush, who praised him as a 'wonderful dad' and told him that he loved him.

'I love you, too,' the father said - his last words on earth.

Thanks! High school French was a long, long time ago.

Same here! but some phrases just stick in one's mind; in my case, anything even vaguely to do with eating ("taste" -- not even the same meaning, but...).

Do your homework on his war activities and then take a deep breath and remember his father Prescott Bush was funding the Nazis at the same time Bush was doing all that heroism. Then his father funded Planned Parenthood with Margaret Sanger. Then his son funded Planned Parenthood for the full eight years he was in the White House. Evilmuch?

So his family was evil. He still willingly strapped his ass in a tin can and flew off to kill the enemy. Sixty times. My hat's off to him.

Pretty much every able-bodied man at the time served in WW2. It really wasn't an option. Younger people may not realize this but avoiding military service used to be a shameful thing and if you had any political aspirations at all, you best have a military record, especially if there was a war on. That's why Joe Kennedy ensured that his military age sons served (even though he personally was more on the side of Hitler).

Now the upper class men typically went to college first and served as officers and some of them flew planes - which was dangerous business to be sure. But they overall had it much better than the working class folk who mostly slogged in the trenches.
