The creche was a gift to the White House in the 1960’s. It wasn’t displayed then because of court rulings about nativity scenes in government buildings. It is an 18th century creche from Italy.

18th century Neapolitan creches are famous the world over. There’s even museums dedicated to them.

My parents’ generation were all born in Italy, and the presepio (creche) was always a huge deal at Christmas. Wasn’t as fancy as these of course, but each of my aunts and uncles had their own pretty elaborate set, carefully and lovingly arranged under the tree. My dad says when he was a kid, the presepio could take up a whole room.
