Dysphoria is notoriously difficult to describe to those who haven’t experienced it, like a flavor.

I'm not going to condemn or judge people who have this mental issue - they have a right to seek happiness in life. But surely the safest and least destructive way to find that happiness would be to try to treat the mental issue rather than mutilating one's own body.

Agree with both your posts. Very sad, and obviously this person seems to be suffering. We don't understand the brain well yet. Someday, we will pinpoint the area from which the thoughts and sensations claimed by this guy originate. Ideally, parents of young people with these feelings can counsel them toward the best care. Lobotomies used to be considered modern "treatment," decades back. I'm not advocating that for this man, but medication or a small neural implant such as is used for Parkinson's symptoms may restore harmony to his brain and body.

Unfortunately, we are not allowed to even discuss alternative solutions like this, without swiftly receiving the label, 'bigot.'

San Francisco, USA has become the social trend for our country. That one town has enormous political sway nationally.

But if different technologies and treatments can be invented to assist people to live more satisfying lives, should they choose them, that is what freedom is about and we shouldn't let one city in California limit an American's options. I know that the activist Milo, for example, was toying with the idea of conversion therapy, he sounds pretty conflicted about being gay. If an insurance company YOU pay for offers an effective treatment, go for it -- but taxpayer subsidies should not be used, esp for a nyt's writer like this poor guy who's about to enter a whole new level of long term pain and suffering.
