Doc Brown may have hit it on the nose when he wildly guessed that there was a problem with Earths gravitational pull in the future, because theres something off in Hollywood in 2018. Weve had an influx of remakes and reboots of well-known and little-known franchises, all for the sake of nostalgia. But for some reason, were clamoring for more.
A new poll reveals that the next movie franchise remake that audiences want is Back to the Future. That, and a slew of other titles like The Matrix and The Hunger Games, because we cant ever let things die. See the results of the franchise remake poll below.
The Hollywood Reporter conducted a poll with Morning Consult that found the franchise that audiences most want to see return is Back to the Future. Of the 2,201 adults surveyed earlier this month, a whopping 71% said they would want to take another trip in the DeLorean with Doc Brown and Marty McFly, closely followed by Pixars Toy Story (69%), Lucasfilms Indiana Jones (68%) and Universals Jurassic Park (67%).
But wait, those following three are movies that already have remakes out or coming soon to theaters. Thats because the question specifically referred to movies they would watch if a new movie in the series were to be released. Which may explain the high performance of movies that are still on peoples radars, with the exception of box office heavyweights Star Wars and Marvels Avengers, which underperformed at 63% and 57%, respectively.
But there are a few non-active franchises that made it to the list. Following Star Wars and Avengers is Hunger Games at 55%, The Matrix at 54%, and Avatar at 53%. Seriously folks, its only been three years since The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 disappointed at the box office, and already youre craving another one? We dont need to revisit a bleak dystopian world when were already living in one. The Matrix is unlikely considering the Wachowskis looming retirement, but never say never, says the Guillermo del Toro-less Pacific Rim: Uprising. And I guess my constant bafflement at James Cameron working on four Avatar sequels is for nought, considering theres an audience for it with at least 53% of Americans.
Theres a strong consumer demand for movie reboots and sequels, which spells good news for movie studios looking to capitalize on that nostalgic feeling, Tyler Sinclair, Morning Consults vice president told THR. Our polling finds half of Americans say they are much more likely to watch throwbacks and revivals.
“Nope - it was lightning in a bottle - great story, production, acting.”
Exactly, everything lined up exactly right ONCE. Don’t damage a good/great movie by retooling it.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
New and improved is usually neither.
Doctor Brown buys uranium from Secretary of State Clinton who has him killed when the check bounces.
Fake poll! Its a lie that most people would like to see this. Most want it to be left alone because its iconic and already a great movie thats not dated as looking old
give-em a few years
Torchy Blaine
Mandrake The Magician
Tailspin Tommie
The Saint (OK, that one might need a name change in the current environment. Unless it paired up with Boston Blackie)
I understand why a lot of people would want to see it re-made. I watched the original with my kids a while back, and you really had to live through the era or you would miss a lot. A DeLorean was cool back in 1985, but today none of the kids have heard of them and a low-end Hyundai looks sportier. Marty McFly was cool back then, but it's hard for kids today to see that was how he was being portrayed (because he's not cool to them.) The original was great, but now it looks dated. The same storyline wouldn't work, but the same concept could. I wouldn't mind seeing someone try.
Toy Story is amazing and would be difficult to improve or update. The Indiana Jones series could be an interesting remake, and it seems like they left a lot of possibilities on the table for the character. Jurassic Park has been subjected to constant remakes ever since the first one came out
Next up “Gone with the Wind”.
