Lettuce is a garnish. Not really meant to be eaten.

A turkey sandwich is not the same w/o lettuce and tomato to adorn it. Slather bread with mayo, a little salt, potato chips, and dig in. (Note to self: pick up loaf of Wonder Bread!)

For the last 50 years (before I was even born!) our family tradition has been to have lasagna and homemade Caesar salad (with homemade croutons, raw egg, anchovies etc) the day BEFORE Thanksgiving. This was the first year we made the salad with something other than romaine. I used a mixture of butter lettuce, endive hearts, and iceberg as a substitute. Really wasn’t all that good. Caesar really has to be from romaine.
