Or maybe that character was originally drawn as Pigpen, which would explain his being seated alone across the table from the others. Then it was decided that "jeez, we really need to get the colored kid in there," so Pigpen was redrawn to be Franklin.

Actually there are three people sitting alone at the table. Franklin is on a side and two individuals at either end. Linus is being discriminated against because of his belief in the Great Pumpkin. And yes the chairs are all different. Some may have come from the house, others the storage shed and Franklin’s from the patio.
