Even organic, the cdc says. I guess only from your own garden would it be safe. Why romaine and not all the lettuces, I wonder?
I went to a rock concert with some of the most beautiful potty trailers Ive ever seen, with multiple bathrooms that looked like in a house. Lets put them in the lettuce fields so we can actually eat the food the farmworkers pick. I dont like outhouses much either.
from virtually the same article in the WaPo last April:
“Contamination can occur on the farm when birds make frequent flights overhead or low-lying fields flood with contaminated water. E. coli can also be spread by farmworkers who dont wash their hands or via farm equipment that has manure on it.
“Once the greens are picked, they move to a packaging plant, where theyre exposed to more workers and more equipment. Product from multiple farms is often bagged in the same facility, which further increases the odds of cross-contamination.
“While packers frequently rinse lettuce with a chlorine wash to kill pathogens, studies have shown those sprays are only partly effective. The same is true of washing fruits and vegetables at home, Tauxe said, because pathogens cling to the surface of produce and can even enter the inside of a leaf or fruit after they’ve been cut open.”
Or round up all the illegals doing the picking, deport them and profer serious charges against those companies who hire them. Time to giterdun.
When I was last down Yuma way they DID have those big potty trailers with full wash stations attached. The signs on the doors were in both English and Spanish saying “Wash Your Hands”.
I don’t know what the issue is, but this seems odd to me.
They already have them, for many years. Believe me, if they grow fresh veggies they are GAP certified, even the grease they use on equipment is food grade. There is another Fed/gov program for fresh pack on top of GAP.
