After Vietnam I joined a tank company in the National Guard. Our vehicles were M-48A2’s upgraded to M-48A5 (diesel engine, 105mm main gun, etc).
Someone who had worked in a rebuild depot (Anniston?) said damaged tanks evac’d from theater contained all kinds of surprises including human remains. Tanks didn’t do well in jungle warfare and were in RVN for only a brief period.
I used to fly daily over a knocked out M-48 near our airfield.
