Washington quarterback Alex Smith suffered a season-ending leg injury against the Houston Texans on Sunday. Smith was dropping back to pass in the second half when he was taken down awkwardly by Kareem Jackson and J.J. Watt. Under the weight of both defenders, Smith’s right leg crumbled, leaving him in a heap on the field.

I remember LT snapping Joe Thiesmann's leg on MNF. Thiesmann never played football again. This is not only a season ending injury but very likely a career ending injury.

His career is over.

Tragic. Smith finally landed with the right team, which was leading the NFC East, and it’s over just like that. And what are the odds this happens to a Skins QB again??

BTW...Theismann was at this game and witnessed the injury, later tweeting “Alex’s leg is exactly like mine 33 yrs ago”. Horrible.

Redskins QB Theismann's injury: Nov. 18, 1985
Redskins QB Smith identical injury: Nov. 18, 2018
Same stadium, 33 years apart to the day
Theismann in attendence, witnesses it.
History is nuts sometimes.

Sad for Alex Smith. Hate to see a player get injured like this and it will likely end his career. I wish him a speedy and full recovery.

Not the same stadium - RFK versus FedEx Field. But damn eerie nonetheless.

More:
Alex Smith and Theisman both broke their tibia and fibula.
Both were on the same exact date.
Both did so at the 40 yard line.
Both were in their 30’s.
Both games ended with the same score.
Both weeks, now and then: DET & PIT won, CIN & TB lost.
Both finish with 301 attempts.

"Same stadium..."

Nope... Different (now they in a POS stadium)...

Skins should never have left JFK stadium...

Thousands of veterans who have served in that godforsaken Middle East hellhole have lost actual limbs and are suffering from PTSD and other assorted mental illnesses and are living on meager government disability.

I'm sure Smith will get treated by the best ortho surgeons and rehab physical therapists and likely could be back on the field next year thanks to medical advances.

Meant to say "home stadium" both times

Same, and it sure doesn't feel like 33 years ago.

1/3 of a century - *poof*...gone.

Hmmm I don’t think so. In Theismann’s day we didn’t have titanium rods. Dr. Jackson basically just had to set the bones and wait until they grew back together.

I know someone who had a compound, open fracture of both her tibia and fibula, and nearly exactly one year later she’s completely back to normal, running, jumping, lifting, etc. I won’t be surprised at all if he has a good outcome too. Prayers up!

He might still be on crutches the start of next season...at least be using a cane...

Love your optimism, though...

Not likely after a Tib-Fib fracture

Nobody knows the extent of Smith's injury yet. It looked horrific, but it could be nothing more than a severe sprain.

I'm not wishing ill will on Smith or athletes in general, but it's sickening to see people tweet their condolences and such over this but then shrug their shoulders when they see homeless vets who were lied to by their government and barely have a pot to piss in.

My prediction is Smith will be back next year. He'll get treated by a top orthopedic doctor and have the best physical therapy available. Even Bernard King of the Knicks came back the following year from a devastating knee injury.

All an ortho doc has to do is insert a titanium rod with this type of fracture. None of the advanced physical therapy and sports medicine existed in 1985 when LT drove Thiesmann into the ground. Smith will be fine and will be back next year, albeit in a backup QB role probably.

Not even close to being the same stadium.
