“Texas? Maybe. But where don’t they have mass illegals and bugs and socialists? Maybe western Texas? “
If you want rural, northwest of San Antonio is good. Actually, San Antonio is good. That’s where I live. Good military town which means conservatives abound. Good religious setting
and great for kids. North San Antonio schools are good and we have some awesome colleges.
San Antonio has a huge Spur fan base, there is the Rampage for the American Hockey League (one below the NHL) and there is culture out the wazoo. And home prices are still reasonable. You can get a 4 br, 2 1/2 bath home in gated community for under 300k, with taxes for veterans around 5500 a year.
Property taxes in most of San Antonio are 3% compared to 1% for California (this is offset by no income tax and low sales tax, low gasoline price). So a $300,000 home has $9,000/year taxes ($750/month). A $500,000 home has $15,000/year taxes ($1,250/month).
But a strategy is to find the enclaves of small incorporated cities that have low property tax rates (like Shavano Park, Hollywood Park, Hill Country Village, Balcony Heights, etc.) on the edge of San Antonio.
