Argentina's Fernandez still inspires loyalty among many

A battery of corruption allegations and criminal charges against former President Cristina Fernandez hasn't fazed a strong band of hard-core backers, who have helped make her a leading — if undeclared — contender to regain power in next year's elections.

Hundreds of supporters, some waving signs saying, "Strength, Cristina!" thronged the street outside when investigators searched the former president's apartment recently.

Cries of support for Fernandez rise from crowds during protests against the austerity policies of the conservative who replaced her as president, Mauricio Macri.

What type of first lady and president was Ms. Fernandez:

That's remarkable backing for a politician who faces numerous formal investigations into alleged bribery, money laundering and criminal association during her own administration from 2007 to 2015 and that of her late husband Nestor Kirchner from 2003 to 2007.

No wonder Argentina went from being one of the richest countries in 1900 to a synonym of economic basket case.

Her program was a bunch of handouts to her supporters. Of course they’ll continue to support her. Just like Ted Kennedy, if you are the guy who wants to play Santa Claus and hand out something for nothing (paid for by “the rich” that is), you’ll find people to vote for you even if you killed someone.

Reminds me of the guy I knew that loved his Mercedes so much he proclaimed it was the best car he ever owned - after replacing the automatic transmission for the fourth time.

I guess it’s all about expectations. :)

What’s the difference between her corruption and the Democrat Gov. Candidate in Florida or the Dem. Senator (Menendez) in New Jersey? Can’t fault Argentina if we have the same problems.

Argentina.. Corruption so thick, you can cut it with a knife.

The Nazis sure picked the right part of South America to set up shop in after WW2.

Peronism is a metastasized cancer in the Argentine body politic. It is there to stay, and will always have it’s loyal cadres who will support ANY scoundrel who embraces it.
