Just over an hour after the governor of the state laid into the Maryland Board of Regents over their decision to recommend retaining head coach D.J. Durkin, the school has gone in a different direction and bowed to public pressure by firing the embattled coach on Wednesday. Multiple reports confirmed the news from College Park:

I am not a college football fan, but this reeks of BS. I read the story, and it sounds like they screwed up and didn’t put the guy in an ice bath and he died.
It is a hard sport. They train them hard and probably panicked and made a mistake when the kid seized. It happens to non-professionals and even occasionally to some professionals.
So someone has to pay.
Sorry the young guy died. But people die, it happens. I don’t watch the news, but my wife had it on when we were doing the trick or treat thing with the neighborhood kids so I couldn’t help seeing it.
And it reeked of moral outrage.
Now the University is on the hook for the report that essentially exonerated Durkin and recommended he keep his job. Durkin can sue the university for wrongful termination and the university will have to try to disavow its own report. They have no prayer in front of a jury when the university’s only defense is “we were so corrupt we created a false report.” See how that works out for you, University of Maryland.
I didn’t even know he was on the hot seat.
Texas State’s coach won last week but he still should be wearing asbestos.
Well, it is Maryland, and it is University of Maryland...that is a confluence of sissified brain-dead leftism, and it came across in the news the way they presented it.
How the hell they reinstated him in the first place is beyond me...
Everyone one the board of regents who advocated and /or approved this should be removed immediately
Maryland is THE Freak state . It is truly hopeless there . Escape while you still can do so . Pathetic
The NCAA corruption of Maryland is complete.
The idiot coach kills a kid with fake-macho exercise. The President said fire his ass. The Board of Regents disagreed; after all, there’s football tickets to sell! The President resigned (presumably forced to by the Board). The athletes went ballistic. The Board of Regents must’ve realized that protests would hurt ticket sales (and TV audiences) and caved, apparently not to doing the right thing, but because they realized they had miscalculated how to sell their souls to the devil.
Florida State will have an opening soon.
Bear Bryant coached at Maryland. I think he and Curly Byrd couldn’t get along.
I don’t even think FSU has $25 MM for a buyout.
Slightly ot -
I understand B1G’s expansion into the East coast, $$$ talks and recruiting etc.
But Rutgers and U of Maryland really don’t belong to B1G. They don’t have the same culture, the same background.
Other than that, I don’t have anything to add to the topic at hand, sorry.
Big 10 = 14 expansion was all about the $$$$$$. Cable companies in the NYC and Washington DC/Baltimore metro areas now carry the Big 10 = 14 network as part of the basic package. The fee is $12 a year in those markets. Some have calculated the expansion brings in almost $50 MM a year. As someone who grew up in the NYC metro area nobody cares about Rutgers football.
Not only that, but you don't have murdering, boy-buggering girl-rapists coaching in the SEC. We stick to clean, honest dirty recruiting.
SEC coaches are virile men who enjoy women whether young assistants, strippers, and escorts. :)
Maryland has decades of traditions playing ACC rivals. Now they play teams that few in Maryland care about.
This was a redoubled reverse and flipped screw up. University of Maryland Athletics, Coaching Staff, Board of Regents and University President are all hosed royally.
Not only does Durkin have a good claim to his full contract, he might also be able to sue for wrongful termination. Huge $$$ when you consider the impact on his future earnings.
What Leftism did to a once-great university... And it’s (one of) my alma maters.
Thanks for your opinion.
I didn’t know having the ‘same culture, same background’ is an a priori requirement for joining the Big 10.
