The sum total of professional employees of the University of Maryland held accountable for the completely preventable death of football player Jordan McNair is now known.
That total is one.
Strength coach Rick Court, a proud troglodyte who frequently degraded players by calling them vile names, including antigay slurs, is the only employee known publicly to lose his job in this entire tragedy. And part of the process of getting rid of Court was giving him a $315,000 settlement to go along with his August resignation.
The primary powers within the athletic department are back, per the schools announcement Tuesday afternoon. At the reported insistence of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents, head coach D.J. Durkin, suspended since mid-August, is back a decision railroaded past school president Wallace Loh. Athletic director Damon Evans is back.
Jordan McNair is never coming back.

Call me crazy
University regents in of the bluest of blue states put its football program and money for the University of Maryland ahead of a dead athlete who happened to be Black! I thought these things would only happen in SEC country. You know those deep red states!
ESPN actually had a good article on this issue. For those interested, here’s the link:
The piece is more of an op/ed but it seems fairly balanced.
I don’t know enough facts to comment on this. Often times young black players have heart attacks....meaning at a much higher rate than other races. So, I wonder what the autopsy showed?
Maybe not crazy but certainly greedy. The deceased was a big boy. 6’4” and around 325 pounds. Prototypical offensive lineman. In a couple of years he could have been the parents’ meal ticket. If you’ve watched any of the NFL Draft coverage, there’s always the big kid who goes #1 or somewhere in the 1st round who says on his first interview, “I’m gone buy momma a house” or “Buy my pops an Esculade”. The deceased could have made millions in an NFL career of 10-15 years. I hope they sue the school for all they can get and I’m really a very anti-tort bar kinda guy. And I live in Maryland and can’t stand any public college and I graduated from one of them on the GI bill decades ago.
Unfathomable. On a scale of 1-10, with 11 being Hue Jackson...
We believe that Coach Durkin has been unfairly blamed for the dysfunction in the athletic department, Maryland Board of Regents chairman Jim Brady said. And while he shares some responsibility, it is not fair to place all of it at his feet.
But, as Head Coach, everything that happens regarding football players, their conduct, health, etc. DOES fall at his feet. I guess the BUCK didn’t stop at his desk.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
