Your post about the value of Americanized children struck a nerve. I work at a school that has a 99% Hispanic student body.
IMHO there is something intrinsically thwarted in the Americanization process when your parents are illegally here. I know many sweet students, born here, who do not feel American. If you ask them, they say they are Mexican. In sports, they root for Mexico to beat the US. They dont really care to learn American history and, though in our schools all their lives, being fed two free meals a day, have no desire to know who George Washington was. They arent sure who Lincoln is. They dont try to lose their accent when speaking English. They watch mostly Spanish channel TV and know far more about Mexicos current events than ours. They simply do not consider themselves one of us in any way.
I think it is a Mexican cultural thing combined with the illegal status. Theyve begun their time here as outsiders, outside the system, and they stay that way. They raise their children to be outsiders.
Before you label me racist, my father grew up in an immigrant, Italian-speaking only, household, and my mother was a legal immigrant. She never gave up her Green Card, but she expected us to be Americans. My father who spoke only Italian at home but had no accent. Many Asian children here speak another language at home, but have unaccented English.
I’m a Republican. The only people I call racists are Democrats. Though the word is a little off. Conservatives aren’t exactly a race, since we come together through free will, rather than birth.
That was a fascinating first person observation. I just took it for granted that Mexicans in our society WERE exactly like Italians and German and Scandanavian, etc. And WANTED to succeed in our society by melting into our large pot. I did notice that they always carried Mexican flags, but didn’t make the mental connection.
Thank you.
About 15 years ago I was substitute teaching a teenage girl who was ethnically Mexican told me about Aztlan (I think that is correct) and how this part of Texas would one day be in Aztlan. She got that idea from somewhere. She wasn’t the brightest bulb in the drawer either but she had been influenced. I asked her why and she said because it belongs to them and was stolen. The book Texas by Michener mentioned the movement so many years ago. If you look at this link you can see that the Atzlan movement has greatly expanded their ambition from what Michener wrote about. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aztl%C4%81n
Invasion and take over. I would love it if Trump is able to end birthright citizenship.
