Venice on 'code red' as city sees worst flooding since 2012

Venice was almost completely flooded on Monday, with rain-soaked tourists evacuated from St Mark's Square as fierce storms lashed Italy.

Water transport services were halted across Venice as 75 per cent of the city centre flooded to 156cm (61inc) by early afternoon, the highest level since 2012.

Residents and visitors were wading through waist-high water in St Mark's Square before the mayor gave orders to evacuate the area. Police wearing hip waders carried a number of children to safety as stranded tourists waited to be ferried to higher ground.

Venice is a tough city for the mobility disabled.

We’ve been to Venice twice, both times in late September. Thankfully the weather was beautiful and sunny both times.

What a disappointment to the international tourists who are there right now, with 75% of the city being flooded. Venice is a beautiful mysterious city when it isn’t five feet under water, yikes.

Actually the entire country of Italy is bad for disabled people. There is no ADA law there where anyone can sue a city or a business for not accomodating the disabled.

The second time we went to Venice we stayed in a very nice four star hotel which had no elevator. We were on the fifth floor and the main staircase was very steep, narrow and winding.

I was in despair at the thought of hauling my 45 pound suitcase up and the stairs. I was also afraid of Mr RooRoo throwing his back out carrying my suitcase. He’s no wimp but he is 63 yesrs old.

No worries, the desk clerk rang for bag assistance, and immediately this huge magnificently muscled African young man appeared. He hoisted my heavy suitcase on the back of his shoulders and easily climbed the five stories’ worth of stairs. I admired his muscles and Mr RooRoo gave him a big tip LOL.

I know. Lots of walking. And that’s mainly what he can’t do. Sigh

Venice was founded by people seeking refuge from the barbarian hordes running rampant all over Italy.
