“I have never seen anyone pass on the right there.”

I hear people mention this. I assume that means on the shoulder, because I don’t get what’s wrong with going into the lane to the right to pass if the car in front of me is going too slow.

One of the L.A. BMW stunts I used to love messing up was them trying to get past a long line of cars at a stoplight by sneaking up the right turn lane, that zipping ahead of everyone at the green. Almost ran a few into parked cars on the other side of the intersection trying that stunt. Guys behind me saw it too and stayed up tight behind to refuse to let them over.

1) California Vehicle Code prohibits passing on the right
2) the far right lane is for merging, The next lane to the left is for truckers and four wheelers to merge either way.
3) if you are traveling in any lane except the right and you have an emergency, you will need to get to the right immediately. Theoretically, while moving to the right, you are dealing with an emergency situation already and shouldn’t have to worry about getting plowed by another vehicle.

Lane discipline is difficult. I find myself passing texters to the right if they are holding up traffic and my horn doesn’t get them to move over and the left is unavailable. The horn actually gets some of them to make room.
