A whole lot of the world gets by on the free version of Malwarebytes and Windows Defender. If you’re going to pay for anything, buy ESET NOD32 AV.
I’ve been using Linux Mint as my primary OS for about six years but I can’t manage to muster the crudeness to pimp for Linux just because a Windows user asks for advice about an antivirus.

This chart is published and updated every month. Watch out for false positives. They can be more trouble than a real virus.

Ya gotta like BitDefender. Very high detection rate, minimal false positives and excellent articles about it.
Personally, I don’t like Avast as I find it way too intrusive.
