Norton is free with Centurlink. I do not like either one. Downloads.com form CNET give choices of lots of free software. I have two dead computers form hackers/virus. I run norton, MRT, super spy ware and malwarebytes. Windows defender got blocked by one or more of the above. I trust the puter a little more than politicians.

Sounds like a lot of fuss. I let Mwarebytes keep me clean. I have an automatic backup that goes to an offsite backup drive for data files and legacy programs I can’t replace now. I am not a techie like my son and do not derive pleasure from tweaking this and adjusting that.

Neither. Scrub all the anti-malware software you’ve got (some of it is in fact malware) and then download the free Microsoft Windows Defender. It is just better.

PS I’m generally not a fan of Microsoft, but they got this right.

Microsoft Defender is really all you need. I also occasionally run free versions of Superantispyware and Malware but all they seem to do is remove cookies.

Avast and Malwarebytes are the best tools to keep your computer safe.

Agreed.

I use the Avast/Malware Bytes in tandem. Seems to work fine but Avast has taken to launching alerts and then charges additional money for the fix. Not pleased with all the "commercial interruptions."

even the free versions are worthless ... they all suck the life out of your PC without really working ...

the only thing that will really work is to establish two logins: one that defaults to an “administrator” that you use only for system maintenance like add, update, remove software, printers, etc., and one that is explicitly set as a “limited account” that you use exclusively to perform your work on ...

Check it out.

Yes, I think there is a yearly cost, don’t remember exactly how much.

But check it out:

I’ve been using solely windows defender on my last 4 PCs. Not one problem. I do use noscript and adblocker on my browsers, though, so that probably helps.

Save your money.

Also, as others mentioned ... no risky clicks.

(If you must risky click, use your spare computer, not your good one.)

Yes, if you are running Windows 10, you need nothing.

MS does a good job on its own.

No. Simply switch from Windows to Linux. There are some very friendly install CD’s/DVD’s.

I started using Linux in 1994. First version had no graphic user interphase. Now it is easier to install than Windows is.

Even on older manchine will run well with a light GUI like XFCE.

I’ve never had malware on a linux machine.

You do know that LifeLock was recently hacked and that members personal info from there is now out in the wind.

Ugh, Norton is the worst EVER. Slows your system down and shoves it's tentacles deep into your system making it hard to get rid of.

My background is in IT help desk support and have had to deal with many of these garbage products on user's machines.

Malwarebytes Premium is well worth the money. It blocks all sorts of intrusions before they get into my computer. Good Real time investment.

Free and works great, preemium version probably overkill if you arent gambling, dowloading torrents or watching porn

Agreed with your comments, including on Windows Defender. Similar background. Appalling waste of money for all the bloatware, Norton in particular.

Good experience with WD and it blocks all threats thus far after 5+ years.

From time to time I do run a registry cleaner and do a deep cleaning of files/cache, but otherwise I have neither had a virus or malware since abandoning XP.

Too many people are click-happy. Being in IT, you know the cause of most of your problems: Users.
