The vicar was far too gentlemanly to be an arsonist. He was more likely to sip sherry and quietly brag about the quality of his sermon on vanity.

The town was named Wakefield, so the FReeper who posted it made an erudite reply referencing a book that English Lit majors read, but probably nobody else.

If you want to read Goldsmith, read his play "She Stoops to Conquer." The gags are still funny.
