The Walking Dead was all about looking to the future on Sunday but when it comes to the ratings, the future is looking increasingly bleak for the AMC zombie apocalypse series.
With a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49, the second episode of the ninth season of the show based on Robert Kirkmans comics took the small screens once top rated show off a cliff to an all-time series low. The Bridge episode comes off last weeks highly promoted season opener, which was the lowest debut for the series and the second least watched premiere.
The October 14 TWD snagged an audience of 5 million, which was a drop of 19% from the October 7 season opener of the reset series. Among the 18-49, TWD fell 21% from the Season 9 debut.
On a show now available early on the no-ad AMC Premiere service and increasingly leaning towards delayed viewing, those drops are actually a tiny bit less than the comparative declines in Season 8. Also, TWD was facing the bite of a much watched Boston Red Soxs win over the Houston Astros in the ALCS on October 14 and Tom Brady making some NFL history on a rising Sunday Night Football.
However, and even with the overall same day decline on both broadcast and cable that doesnt take away from the fact that TWD is performing worst now in the demo and with viewers than even its first few episodes of the abbreviated Season 1 back in 2019 did. It also cannot avoid the reality that in the key demo The Bridge cratered 50% from what The Damned second episode of a declining Season 8 drew on October 29 last year.
AMC, of course, like to save their powder for the Live +3 numbers that are expected later this week.
With all that, TWD has a potential ace card or two to still play this season. Series OG Andrew Lincoln is leaving for good this year and Lauren Cohan is stepping out to be co-lead on the ABC midseason newbie Whiskey Cavalier. So far, exactly when and at what point in the season those departures will occur has not been unveiled. Yet, if past big moments on TWD are any indication, they will certainly be well watched, on one platform or another.
The last season was kind of stupid. The whole Negin thing has gone on WAY too long.
It’s hard to make myself care about it much anymore to be honest.
The most notable thing about this season so far is everyone seems to be going interracial relationship crazy.
They have been advertising this is the last episodes of Rick Grimes anyway
Up against the Red Sox and the Pats? That rating is wonderful.
It started too soon this year.
I have to admit, the storyline seems a little moldy.
They should have let Negin bleed out.
You are either hooking up with another race or the same sex.
Thats a little tedious.
I don’t watch it on Sundays. I do watch it later in the week. Do I count? I imagine there are many thousands more that do as I do.
Are they setting up Maggie to be a new heavy? She seems to have gone darker.
I think the viewers finally caught on that it isn’t real . . . I mean, heck, what about all the zombies wearing nice, clean clothes and none of them are even nekkid. Dang, I figured it out in the first season! What took them so long?
Nine years.... that’s a heckuva run. Like most series though the producers beat it into the ground instead of stopping before it all gets too old. I never watched it after the second season.
Unless you are a Nielsen family , does not matter what you watch as per tvgrimreaper
Could it be the continued litany of tactical and strategic CFs made by Rick?
Yeah, I feel like I’m being socially preached to by a TV show, and I do not like to be socially preached to by TV shows.
It has no point.
The plot is stuck and they’ve killed off anyone you would care about.
I got so sick of the nihilistic tone of the show that I just dont care anymore. People like a show with adversity, but we want a just reward in the end, not just more of the same with the writers pulling the rug out from these people every season.
And those zombies should all be rotted by now.
I watched till the baseball bat came on.
I grew up where it is filmed, People, South of Atlanta are sick of these people trying to buy elections. Been pouring in millions for Democrats, they have been losing.
It’s a show that has run it’s course, like a lot of them. For instance on CBS NCIS, Criminal Minds, NBC, Law & Order SUV, these shows have been on longer than anybody thought possible, and they have all run their course.
Series sort of lost it for me when they killed off Glenn and Abraham. Not only were they two of the more likable characters, but their deaths were just too graphic even for a such a graphic series.
You do count.
It’s called Live + 3.
It means live viewers plus viewers up to 3 days after live.
It’s another way to track ratings.
I haven’t watched it since I first saw that stupid eenie meenie miney moe promo featuring Negan.
I do, however, still enjoy watcing past episodes.
You know, when the show was actually riveting.
I got hooked when I was channel surfing and came upon the church scene. I thought it would take several episodes to resolve(and I wanted to see what happened to the baby), but then BAM... it was OVER.
