Actually, before I retired in 07, I watched a demonstration of a US Army device mounted on a M1098, microwave directed energy crowd control thing during MP Regimental Week on Fort L WOod- indeed it warmed my exposed skin rather uncomfortable in the demo- ....
Whether it became type classified or not and in the inventory, I do not know.
I have seen and experienced the same thing. Directed energy is very risky as a non-lethal crowd control weapon because it can cause the eyes to cook and cause permanent damage. It is useful for other purposes but it does not meet the requirement of not causing permanent injury for the crowd control mission.
Indeed- the ADS and ADS II ( Area denial System) was fisrt demonstrated in 2004, fielded in 20009, wne to AFG, but was not used ( heavy clothes make it cough, cough, “ineffective). Series II was fielded in 2011 but is not qualified for use due to several serious injuries in testing.
Seems that anyone with a brain would wear long clothes, sunglasses/shemagh/scarf and gloves and be pretty much immune.
Seems that the wavelength that makes it effective against bare skin is defeated by simple clothing, and the wavelength and energy required to be effective against clothed skin makes short French fry work of exposed skin/eyes.
Oops, another billion wasted.
