The problem occurred as the booster stages of the Soyuz rocket separated. Mission control in Houston confirms that the crew will be attempting a ballistic reentry. A sharp descent that will hopefully allow them to land downrange.
I was watching too. Hope they land ok.
The Recovery crews are an hour and a half from the predicted landing site.
Soyuz rocket carrying crew to ISS malfunctions during launch, crew faces emergency landing
The Russian Soyuz rocket carrying two crewmembers suffered a booster malfunction during launch in Kazakhstan.
The boosters on a second-stage launching vehicle switched off, the sources at the Baikonur Cosmodrome told Interfax news agency. The crew is alive. They had made an emergency landing.
Thank you for the help!
The two people onboard were cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague of NASA. The third passenger place was reserved for cargo.
Praise be to God!
Recovery is in contact with crew and they are in good condition.
The Russian Soyuz spacecraft made emergency landing in Kazakhstan after its rocket booster malfunctioned. Both crew members on board are alive and unharmed.
The spacecraft, carrying cosmonaut Alexey Ovchining and NASAa Nick Hague, had successfully landed about 20-25 kilometers from Zhezkazgan, central Kazakhstan. Four helicopters were sent to pick up the crewmembers.
The crew has landed. Everyone is alive, Russian space chief Dmitry Rogozin wrote on Twitter.
NASA confirmed the space capsules successful landing and said that the crew are in good condition and in contact.
I guess training to the point of muscle memory works again.
They did not have much time to make a decision. They just pulled the plug. Rocket travel is a dangerous thing.
Thanks! Glad they made it back okay!! (I wonder if the equipment survived?)
As usual, the Daily Mail has great coverage.
They have several videos, one from inside the capsule.
Since we pay Russia for flights up to the International Space Station, do we get a refund?
Supposedly Roskosmos cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and astronaut Nick Haig pictured in the immediate aftermath of the terrifying incident.
“Since we pay Russia for flights up to the International Space Station, do we get a refund?”
I’d say the refund is getting our guy back on the ground, safely. At least that’s good enough for me!
Not even a coupon good for a free upgrade on our next flight?
Yea, that would be fair!
Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague feel O.K.They have passed a medical examination and no problems have been found. They're drinking tea and joking now. Interfax (in Russian)
