I wonder if these people are offended by my addressing a pet as "good boy" or "good girl". After all, why should I presume the pet's "gender" matches its anatomy?

That is a helluva good argument you make. They might say, well, the difference is, humans have brains and so are able to make their own decisions, to which we would respond, “so you are saying that gender is decided in the mind, not in the genes? Wouldn’t that imply a mental disorder?”

In my experience, they ALWAYS correct me when I get the sex of their dog wrong. "He's a handsome fella" is answered with "She sure is." (I assume all dogs are male and all cats are female. Call me sexist.)
We'll see how long that lasts.
