I don’t recall a mention of Bob Denver in the Laurel Canyon material. I don’t think he hung out with that crowd, actors among which included Jack Nicholson, Warren Beaty, Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, Candace Bergen, Susan Tate, etc.
Two things that were weird about the bands associated with Laurel Canyon: many of their fathers were CIA operatives, and many of them had very little talent. People laugh about the Monkees as being an artificial construct. Many of the bands of that area/era were similarly constructed of people who had little musical ability — some didn’t even have instruments. Their early albums were populated by studio musicians and their early concerts were horrible. Remarkably, an entire infrastructure and eventually the LA music industry spontaneously emerged to support these no-talent wunderkinds. “Coincidentally”, the media banded together to provide free publicity for bands who would have otherwise never had a chance at the big time.
