In December 1977, Stevens converted to Islam, and he adopted the name Yusuf Islam the following year. In 1979, he auctioned all of his guitars for charity and left his musical career in order to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. He was embroiled in a long-running controversy regarding comments which he made in 1989 about the death fatwa on author Salman Rushdie.

Islam transformed a talented writer of uplifting songs into a messenger of death.
It’s a shame he went to the dark side, but he left great music behind. If I had to dislike the creative result for the creator, I’d have a world bare of much worth. One can’t live on Clint Eastwood alone. And many of the really great fine artists were real pieces of work. I’m a TV/movie fan and try very hard not to read anything about the politics of my favorite stars. Except for William Shatner, of course.
Greatly agree about Islam.
