U.S. Capitol Police on Wednesday arrested a suspect for allegedly “doxing” GOP senators by posting their private information online.
The suspect, 27-year-old Jackson Cosko of Washington, D.C., has been charged with publicizing restricted personal information, witness tampering, second-degree burglary, threatening interstate communications, unauthorized use of a government computer, identity theft, and unlawful entry, according to a Wednesday press release.
The Capitol Police said an investigation is ongoing, but declined to answer The Hill’s requests for comment.
Reports emerged last week that someone from within the U.S. House of Representatives had posted the home addresses and personal cell phone numbers of GOP Sens. Orrin Hatch (Utah), Mike Lee (Utah) and Lindsey Graham (S.C.) on Wikipedia.
Rumors circulated online that the IP address behind the edits came from the office of Maxine Waters (D-Calif.), though the California congresswoman later said the Capitol Police and a tech specialist determined the “IP address in question does not belong to my office or anyone on my staff.”
Cosco worked for Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and previously worked for Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA).
A September 2018 letter from Sheila Jackson Lee (D -TX) identified him as a staffer for her office at that time.
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee is a member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
A different person working for Hassan was the intern suspended for shouting F*** You at President Trump.
Jackson Lee’s office identified Cosko as an intern and said he was fired because of the accusations.
Additional charges may be forthcoming…
Some are felony-related charges. If he gets a good lawyer, and just admit guilt to the misdemeanor charges...he’d get off with just a fine and a year of probation (my humble feeling). But if the Justice Department goes after just one of the felony charges and wins, he’d probably do at least four to six months in some prison. His clearance would be shot, and jobs will be limited in the future.
It’s a total waste of good prison space though. If I were the judge, I’d mandate you have to go and get a real job (physical labor like digging ditches), and zero social media usage for three years. And I’d make him go and personally apologize to each single person he injured in some fashion.
