I was a teenager at the time and was hearing about how controversial the song was before I heard it on the radio.
When I finally heard it I could not argue with it like I wanted to going into the experience.
I still have the song on my 3000 song playlist and I identify with it. I know there are real people out there who shared the same experience and I feel some of it in my own life experience.

Ravaged faces, not tall (but thin at least), hand-me-downs, never called in choosing sides (and that was NOT because of lack of athletic ability), .......
And it’s not a snowflake thing. not the *everyone in the world has a cell phone but me, whimper*, kind of thing. Kids can be exceedingly cruel and when you’re the new kid in town, you bear the brunt of it.
