Its been pointed out to me by several Alaskans & former Alaskans that the denizens of the state only want you to think theyre rugged independent individualists. Thats just for the reality TV shows. Theyre really quite content with being on the dole. That's true. Also, when I was there, I noticed that alcoholism is a huge problem. Many people are on the dole, and drunk.
Every place has its problems, and people are sinners all over. But I think the Alaska of 40 or 50 years ago is what many people think Alaska is like now. It isn't.
