‘Conners’ cast says it’s ‘awkward’ filming without Roseanne Bar

With “The Conners” slated to debut this month sans Roseanne Barr, the remaining cast members are reflecting on their new direction after Barr’s firing.

“It was awkward but not awkward,” Laurie Metcalf, who plays Jackie Harris, told People about filming without Barr. “It was right but not right, wrong but not wrong.”

As the series is expected to address, Barr’s character is killed off and the family is left to recover.

“Any sadness that we feel over what we’ve lost we’re hopefully channeling in an honest way into the show,” added Sarah Gilbert, who returned to her role as Darlene Conner and a producer on the show. “And our show has always been able to deal with heavy topics, particularly for a sitcom.”

Back in May, ABC swiftly canceled “Roseanne” after Barr, 65, posted racist tweets about Valerie Jarrett. The network called her behavior not in line with its values. Then came discussion of whether the show could return without Barr — who played a pivotal role both in front of and behind the camera. Barr ultimately chose to remove herself so the show could survive.

“That was a very big deal,” said John Goodman, who plays Dan Conner. “To give us a chance.”

Goodman, 66, adds he and the remaining cast didn’t want to let the series end until they were truly finished. “There was a debt owed to this fictional family. We’ll figure out how to get through this, the family will, everybody will. We want to finish telling this story.”

Of the remaining stars, Goodman appeared to have the most difficulty with the cancellation news.

“I had a bad time for about a month,” he recalled. “And then other things started going wrong. I fell down the steps and broke a rib. My wife got sick

They aren’t just killing off her Character, they are pushing a narrative that Roseanne’s Character was a Drug Addict who died of an Opioid Overdose...

You knw, because that is how Racists deserve to die.

They can do a story about how his son-in-law had to quit his job at a grocery store to care for the family after dad "went away."

It’s a fascinating exercise in watching ideology meet the hard asphalt of reality. Nobody is going to watch this, you can’t take the sole star talent out of a show and expect the audience to keep showing up. She will get a bigger audience on her own in her next gig.

Fox needs to sign Rosanne to create a new series.
She’s a comic genius. Fox could bank $$$ on it.

Maybe they should right in Rosanne to the Tim Allen show on Fox Fridays at 800pm. Now that would be a hoot she could play their house keeper or maid.

When I heard they were doing the show without Roseann, I quipped that the show’s new name should be “DOA”.

Roseanne Barr hit a nerve at the time her show first ran, telling stories of a blue collar family barely above the poverty line. She and Goodman fit those roles to a T.

It would be hard for her to mold a new show that wasn't a replica of the old show; she would need a totally unique new show premise. I do have an idea.

What if Barr starred in a new show that was a sort of Rosie the Riveter type show? She could play a woman foreman at a recently reopened manufacturing plant in the rust belt. Instead of playing the nagging wife to a barely hirable husband and annoying kids, she could play a strong assertive team leader at a blue collar factory.

This time, she's the rally point of getting a restarted plant operational again. The cast can include both home (if they want to make her married again) and factory workers. The factory workers would all be new to the job, with perhaps a few older returnees from before it closed (that's the spot for the "and also starring..." character actor.

Home could either be aging parents to take care of, a son who works at the factory where mom is the boss, maybe she's divorced or widowed, maybe the neighbor runs a dying mom and pop store on Main Street.

They could do union stories (strikes), political stories (trade tariffs), uplifting stories (town revitalization), military stories (hiring veterans), etc.

It might last a few seasons.

Lots of people recount the same about John Goodman - He is an a-hole, world-class.

During the shows his nostrils would be coated in a ring of coke, and he used to get pretty mean and violent to the boy. You know, when he was a boy.

None of these people deserve any respect.

It’s going to be really awkward when they’re in the unemployment line in 6 months.

“Just switch Rosie Barr with Rosie O’Donnell. I’m sure nobody will notice.”

I would like to see Dan meet a woman. The character of woman is played by Roseanne.

that makes it cringy that they kill off her character with a drug over dose.. despite him being an addict there are still some who would tune in for john goodman.no where near the numbers that Rosanne brought to the show.

Some friends you are — except for John Goddman, Roseanne Barr MADE your careers and your fame. Bunch of sell-outs.

Not. Going. to. Watch.

Then they should have fought to get her back. But, no, they were selfish little hateful libs who drove the bus over her.

my idea for Roseanne’s next show is to keep the name of the show Rosanne but make her run a Vermont hotel …. she could then play the same character she had on the original show but have her reacting to different characters and situiations that never could of happen with the original show… then after running for 5 years you can have Rosanne waking up in bed John Goodman and say I had the strangest dream.

Gilbert - lesbian “married” to a real freak. Leave her to The View and not spreading her grossness all over the tv.

The debt you owe is to Roseanne Barr. It would have been nice if you acknowledged it. Nobody will tune in continuously to see the supporting cast. Stupid.

They're all having a gay old time.

At least John Goodman should have said, no Rosie, no show. I'm not doing it. Then he could have joined her on a different show. This #### show isn't going to last.
