Most people, if they know the name Samothrace at all, know it for the magnificent sculpture now found in the Paris (FR) Louvre, "The Winged Victory of Samothrace" created around 200 BCE.

The island itself is in the north central Aegean Sea, close to the southern exit of the Hellespont / Dardanelles, the passage between the Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara and Black Seas.
