Unless they have video, photos of him passed out..hearsay.
He did focus a little too much on his love for beer..maybe to counter reports like this. He can say, well I didn’t hide the fact..yes, I drank beer..who didn’t during those years!?

If he hadn't addressed his drinking, they would have found someone to bring it out. If someone had seen him drink a Shirley Temple the left would have blown it out of proportion.

It would have looked worse than bringing it up himself.
