Saudi Arabia will turn its northwestern Red Sea coast into a luxury tourism resort to rival the French Riviera, its Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced Wednesday.

The Amaala development would be 'a natural extension of the Mediterranean Sea, and dubbed the Riviera of the Middle East', according to the country's top sovereign wealth fund.

Located in the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Nature Reserve, the resort will feature hotels, private villas, an arts academy and a yacht club.

This area they are talking about....is virtually deserted and no one really living there. I could see some fenced off compound on the Red Sea....some man-made lake joining to it, and a airport being built to fly people in and out of the region.

But you can’t allow folks to head south along the sea (to Jeddah or Mecca). I think they are looking at how Dubai is working and a bit jealous.

totally believe you except that the saudis have the money to turn the bottom picture into the top picture. whether anyone would want to go there is another question. further, how long it would be before zombies walked into town with bombs strapped to them is another question.

Unless they construct a desalinization plant to feed any vegetation, it ain't gonna happen. The Riviera gets plenty of rainfall to keep the area lush. The Arabian peninsula, especially around the Red Sea gets very little. So little, that they measure it in millimeters.

Very interesting map. FWIW, the dark blue areas average 10.6 inches or over per year. Mesa, Arizona averages 9.3 inches. Phoenix just over 8". Yuma, Arizona is probably the driest major city in the USA (over 50,000 people) at 3.4"

These low rainfall totals correspond to the second lightest blue, light blue and light orange on this map respectively.

Arizona's early Mormon pioneers knew what they were doing when they picked the Mesa area to settle over nearby Phoenix. That's some dry country, but not compared to Soddie Arabia.

I am from Phoenix. If it weren’t for Saguaro Lake, Mesa would not be there. Nor would any of the crops planted in the area. Or any of the cattle that my friend’s family raises. Phoenix put a ban on installing grass with new construction (too many snowbirds) back in the 90’s because the average humidity had increased enough to jeopardize some of the crops.

This is a testimony as to what Saudi will need to do in order to support any resort city construction.

Agree about desalination. But there’s a hidden planet wide revolution going on as to the cost of desalination. The Israelis have mastered it so well they use desalinated water for irrigation of their farms. Now they’re very smart about it. the desalinated water first goes to their cities, then its cleaned to brown water standards—& then sent to their farms.

The saudis don’t have to be quite as cost conscious as the Israelis. They won’t have forests of palm trees. but there will be plenty of vegetation. These are not going to be resorts for the hoi poloi. The saudis want to steal vacationers from dubai and uae. take a look at what those countries built from nothing and nothing. Their desalination plants are older and more expensive. The UAE and Dubai are starting up whole industries of indoor farms.

Sure, when I think of the “Riviera”, I think of no alcohol and the constant threat of terrorist attack.

In all honesty, I hope they do so, IF they add lots of vegetation. This could start the area to be more green and they could begin to reclaim some of the desert.

I wish all arid countries would start such an endeavor.

They say that Neom at least will not operate under Sharia law, that they hope to build a high-tech Dubai.

Even though this is about the hottest place on earth, it can still draw companies if you can offer a secure place to operate, financial privacy with respect to EU and US governments, physical safety, a certain amount of freedom for entrepreneurs, low or no taxes, and high quality living conditions (aside from the heat...) This is essentially why companies go to Dubai. Offering this is a complete departure for the Saudis, and it is a reflection of the direction the Crown Prince wants to take the country.

Very different kind of agriculture out there, that's for sure. I've heard that they used even part of the acqueduct system built by the ancient HoHoKam tribe.

A lot of dumb@$$es insult a part of my heritage when they write off the Native Americans as a bunch of savages with little or no agricultural knowledge. Truth is that it was a relative handful of tribes (the Comanche and Aztec being two of the better examples) who prefered warfare and piracy to agriculture. The Sioux became that way only when driven from their Ohio Valley homeland in the mid-1400s in stages to what are now the Western Dakotas.
