I said that the statute of limitations had not run. I was wrong. I was looking at the current law.

Being a NON-lawyer, I forgot that the applicable law is the law in effect at the time of the alleged crime. I should have known this as my father was a lawyer and grandfather and state Supreme Court Justice. We got stupid criminal stories around the dinner table.

In my defense, I'm not as young as I was then.

No problem. You've done what you needed to do to justify your previous statements.
You were ignorant, meaning uninformed (not stupid) and you're now informed.

And my apologies as well. I intended my comment for those who should have known about it, and probably do/did know about it, (talking heads/political pundits/lawyers and politicians) and pushed the false assertion anyway, not anybody in particular here.
