Could be they were out on the 4th and it was freezing cold instead of hot.

Back in my grad school days (University of Colorado) spent quite a few summertime hours....including at least one 4th of July....skiing on a place known as St. Mary's Glacier.

No lifts, bars or parking lots so the skiing was at least half rugged terrain hike followed by a nice run back down (provided you didn't get off into the rocks like that one poor dude did...), but....

Can't recall I ever saw an elephant up there even when "mildly" inebriated.
