When did singers become “artists”? ...maybe about the time that some of the popular “artists” could not sing very well....

I’m sure it happened long before, but Madona is the first I remember getting that type of description for a singer or individual songs. Pink Floyd, The Who, The Beatles, and others had “artistic” compliments applied to them but more for larger compilations (movies, albums) which carried artistic themes through many scenes/movements and a bigger presentation than just 3 minutes of pleasant (or not) noise/lyrics followed by an unrelated 3 minutes of more noise.
