Millions of Shiite Muslims across the globe are commemorating one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar: Ashura, which mourns the death of the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
In some parts of the world these celebrations come in the shape of self-flagellation using knives and swords or walking on hot coals - and even young children are forced to take part.
These images from India and Pakistan show boys of primary school age running across burning embers, and young men covered in blood from whipping themselves with knives on chains.

This is a satanic cult of evil.
GWB, care to comment?
You must COEXIST you Philistine, you. Thats what the bumper stickers demand!
All cultures . . . .
I believe that they should follow the lead that the (false) prophets grandson took and die.
-or-
The better option, to renounce Islam and follow the Son of Man.
Religion of Shite
Unless they do things differently, those coals are about as hot as summer beach sand or parking lot asphalt. If you move quickly you’re fine. Note that the coals-walking is being done in a dark area so the glow can be seen more easily.
Nice to see a UK media outlet talking about muslim barbarity though.
You can’t coexist with people that want to kill you.
Walking over a bed of hot coals doesn’t hurt at all.
I’ve walked over beach sand that was hotter, not to mention black asphalt on the way to the beach.
In Ashara the kids can do it if they want to. It’s a rite of passage with no particular age in mind.
Normally the kids just wipe blood on themselves - there is no cut. But like my 4 year old demanding everyday to work out with me, any boy can make this request and the men will follow it.
The kid isn’t supposed to be on the coals. But if he felt left out, and asked to do it then they’ll allow it. They’ll all cheer that he’s so tough.
And probably strap a bomb to him and send him into an Israeli playground. I’m not defending this cult, but I do think it’s important to know the truth over the hype.
Hot coal walking is a parlor trick.
As for that other stuff, proving once again they are sickos.
A bastard people from a bastard birth
Actually the whole walking over coals, provided done properly is more of a parlor trick than any sort of risk. As long as the ash is distributed properly on top, you have little risk of actually burning yourself by walking over them.
Smacking your forehead with blades, well that’s just macabre
In the Philipines in some villages still they have celebrations at Easter that include parades that include a young man actually nailed to a cross; not merely looking as if nailed to a cross but actually nailed to it.
