In the 50s we would camp/vacation on Cape Hatteras, way before there was a bridge or paved road on the north end. we would cross over to Ocracoke to see the horses and ship wrecks on the beach. We always had stuff to feed the horses mainly carrots. The horses would stick their heads in the car to get fed and would follow us around to hoping for more. The horses close to town were so tame that the kids would come out put a rope bridle on them and ride them bareback.
