The reality of quantum computing could be just three years away

Quantum computing has moved out of the realm of theoretical physics and into the real world, but its potential and promise are still years away.

Onstage at TechCrunch Disrupt SF, a powerhouse in the world of quantum research and a young upstart in the field presented visions for the future of the industry that illustrated both how far the industry has come and how far the technology has to go.

For both Dario Gil, the chief operating officer of IBM Research and the company’s vice president of artificial intelligence and quantum computing, and Chad Rigetti, a former IBM researcher who founded Rigetti Computing and serves as its chief executive, the moment that a quantum computer will be able to perform operations better than a classical computer is only three years away.

They say, "3 to 5 years.” I wonder if that’s like the eternal ten year time frame for controlled fusion?

But if it is real, one wonders how applicable quantum computing might be to neural net problems . . .

Yep. Remember her black security guard/secret service guy that followed her around everywhere when she was campaining? He's dead. His name was Todd Madison and he protected Her Hellness since 2013. After her "fainting spell" was caught on video he suddenly died of a "seizure". This guy in the photo below. He failed her so once again when someone fails Her Hellness, there must be "hell to pay"...

Let me know if you need transport. My company provides it, lit and dark.

Longevity used to mean something. Doesn’t seem to hold the sway that it once did. Six years seems lengthy in the current environment and should look nice on your resume.

Specific expertise seems to be on the same trajectory - the market now seems to prefer “generalists” who can quickly can change roles from network admin to sys admin to break/fix guy to whatever else.

This phenomenon puts a premium on an ability to acquire knowledge and expertise on the fly, rapid adaptability, no fear of the learning curve, etc.

At least in my little slice of the world, the emphasis upon certifications seems to be in decline, When interviewing candidates, I’ve started to look for;

1) Ability to communicate - written and in person
2) Ability to make and defend decisions
3) Ability to acquire new knowledge/not intimidated by the learning curve
4) Ability to work effectively with “episodically” irate customers and teammates (my attempt at diplomacy)

None of these criteria are related to specific technologies.

I guess it boils down to - “can I/we live with you for eight to ten hours a day”. The specific technology can be taught to a properly motivated individual but we can’t teach them how to be a decent person/decent teammate upon whom the team will rely.

Despite these observations, the market is rapidly improving as evidenced by various job boards at which I’ll occasionally glance. Seems like a fine time to plan for a move or entry into the work force.

Good luck.

HA! I wish I was in SC (current weather situation notwithstanding). The climate and the politics there suit me to a tee and the people that I’ve met there are terrific folks.
Shackled to the Peoples Republic of NY for a few more years. I’m at the end of the state that is forced to feed the sow from which the rest of state suckles.......

I hope you’re not adversely impacted by the storm.
Good luck.

So far, the weather isn’t bad. A bit breezy and overcast.

While the spouse is mopping and running the vacuum cleaner, me and the aged GSD are on the rear deck watching Escape To Athena.

The vacuum cleaner bothers the dog.

The hardware might be around soon, but I know of no programming language built to accommodate QC.
