It reminds me of what happened with the alleged witches in Salem, MA in the late 17th century. Subsequent researchers have blamed the abnormal behavior of the women on the fungus ergot, found in spoiled rye. Eating ergot-contaminated foods can lead to muscle spasms, vomiting, delusions and hallucinations.
