Geoffrey Owens is returning to prime time in the wake of a recent job-shaming controversy. The Cosby Show vet has joined the cast of the OWN drama The Haves and the Have Nots in a recurring capacity, according to TMZ. Hell appear in 10 episodes throughout the upcoming Season 6 in an undisclosed role.
Tyler Perry, who created The Haves and the Have Nots, first reached out to Owens via social media on Monday after certain media outlets sought to shame the Cosby alum for working at a Trader Joes grocery store in Clifton, N.J. Im about to start shootings OWNs number one drama next week! Perry exclaimed. Come join us!!! I have so much respect for people who hustle between gigs. The measure of a true artist.
Following a long holiday weekend in which a photo of him bagging groceries went viral, Owens appeared on ABCs Good Morning America on Tuesday, where he said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support he received from both fans and fellow actors. Its really overwhelming in a good way, he said of the response. When I first saw those pictures I was really devastated. But because of the instant and worldwide response, the shame part didnt last very long.
Owens is best known for his role as Cliff Huxtables son-in-law Elvin Tibideaux in the long-running sitcom The Cosby Show. Recent TV credits include episodes of The Affair, The Blacklist, Blue Bloods, Divorce, Elementary and Lucifer.
I'd get to wear Hawaiian shirts and tell customers what aisle the turkey stuffing potato chips are in.
Now, those turkey stuffing potato chips are an acquired taste. My SO loves them & I had to lay in a winter supply for her.
Me, on the other hand, not so much. Fun item though. I have a TJ’s right down the street.
Forgive me but what is the shame of working at Trader Joe’s, a job is a job.
I love telling customers where to go and how to get there. I get to do that all day long.
It is a job, but to somebody who was hoping to make it big in Hollywood but failed, it’s something they can be self conscious about.
Would it be any different if you had earned a computing degree or an engineering degree, but the only job you were able to get was at the local gas station?
I can understand his self-consciousness about it.
Never be ashamed of any honest employment.
Cool story, but I wonder. Did Owens not have enough hustle to call Perry in the first place, or did Perry not have enough respect for Owens to return Owens' calls? Seems one or the other might be the case.
For us here, nothing. For the Hollywood snobs on the left, it's the kind of stuff they look down their nose at.
It was Bill Cosby who screwed him
When reruns for COSBY SHOW were pulled, he lost all residuals from the show
Had to do something to make up for lost revenue
