If someone asks for map directions it is generally not a good idea to start talking about map datums and geodesics.

I'd have to get out the book again, but that really is an interesting study if one takes the time.

As a young Ensign I stood JOOD watch with the Weapons Officer. He taught me practical navigation, ship handling, watch standing.

One of the things he taught me was how to do maneuvering board (polar geographic plot) approximations in my head. He explained that an OOD should rely on combat for exact maneuvering solutions but you could get the ship heading in the right direction at a close speed and then make adjustments. Other than the Captain he was by far the best ship driver.
