LAS VEGAS (KSNV) UPDATE, Sept. 3 | Police suspect homicide after the body of a 3-year-old boy was found in a remote area near Lake Mead National Recreation Area, shortly after he was reported missing from Sunset Park.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lt. Ray Spencer told reporters Monday morning that two people have been taken into custody as suspects in the death of Daniel Theriot. He identified the two suspects as the boy's 20-year-old mother and her 40-year-old boyfriend.
He said he could not disclose any details on the cause or manner of death, but called the circumstances "absolutely disturbing."
"There is nothing accidental about this investigation, as far as the death of this child," Spencer said.
Daniel was reported missing around 9 a.m. Sunday from Sunset Park. According to Spencer, authorities soon became suspicious of the details provided, with people at the park saying they did not see the child or a search for him until police responded.
Police began a criminal investigation separate from the search, Spencer said, and both continued overnight until Daniel's body was found early Monday morning.
Spencer said police believe the child's time of death was within 12 hours of Sunday's missing person report.
The two suspects will initially be booked Monday afternoon on suspicion of child abuse related to a 2-year-old child found at their home. Spencer said both suspects will likely face charges in the 3-year-old's death as well, though the investigation is still ongoing.
And still, the greatest peril to small children is the mother’s boyfriend.
As soon as the little guy breathed his last breath, he was embraced by the One Who loves children Who said “let the little ones come to Me.”
He is forever beyond the griefs of this life.
Whoever killed him, if they do not repent, will face wrath because the shedding of innocent blood is something He especially hates.
It’s funny. They showed the mother but not the boyfriend.
I’ll never understand in this life why God doesn’t prevent things like this, but I am merely a man.
This kind of thing breaks my heart.
