Baldwin is the latest high-profile actor to join the project, which is scheduled to begin shooting in two weeks. Robert De Niro, Deadpool 2 breakout Zazie Beetz and Glow actor Marc Maron are already on the call sheet.
Phoenix is set to portray the DC Comics villain in a film that is more moderately budgeted and darker than the studios other DC-based movies that make up its shared universe. The project is also described as more of a dark character study than a crime thriller, with Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy as the tonal watchwords.
Baldwin has been tapped for the role of Thomas Wayne, who in Batman lore is the father of Bruce Wayne, the future caped crusader.
But this being a movie project that will veer off-center from the traditional Batman canon, sources say the script paints Thomas Wayne as a cheesy and tanned businessman who is more in the mold of a 1980s Donald Trump.

Marvel is totally eating D.C.’s lunch.
Try Arkhaven comics. Good stuff
Well, the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents was a defining factor in his decision to become the Bat Man, so as long as the scene is in there, it will be worth watching.
And we can pretend it is real!
Got no interest in an A. Baldwin movie.
So now we know who put the “bat” in Batman.
It will, with Baldwin in it.
Worst decision since Warner decided to make a big deal out of Marlon Brando playing Jor-El in Superman.
Alec is now getting the kind of roles that went to Marlon Brando 40 years ago. I’m pretty sure Brando played Superman’s father in one of those first movies with Christopher Reeves.
How so?
Brando's role in Superman got people into theaters.
It got people to notice the picture.
Alec Baldwin won't be any kind of major draw.
Alec? Another reason to not watch.
Also made for a great John Belushi bit...
"My Son. My Son. I am your father, Jor-El. Your mother and I have sent you to Earth the only survivor of Krypton. As you hear this, I will have been dead many centuries, but I will be reborn as Charlie Rich."
Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker? Yet another train wreck on its way.
Soon they'll have BatBen breastfeeding in public for their next Social Engineering lecture scene.
Ceasar Romero Is the only Joker!!
But very disappointed with how they're doing the movies. Other than the Batman Trilogy and Wonder Woman, the rest of the DC Universe movies suck.
Has to be better than Jared Leto. Why do they keep putting all these method actors in this role? Mark Hamill would be best.
Does he berate his child on the phone? Audiences love it when scumbag baldwin does that
