It snowed on the 4th of July.
Fellow BOLS grad!!!
NOLS ‘68.
That’s funny. My sister used to live in Montana. They used to call the seasons Winter, almost winter and summer (which was super short).
My buddy took a group of hs kids backpacking up Granite Peak in Montana, in August.
A couple of kids didn’t have the “required” winter clothing.
But going against his better judgement, they went anyway.
On the way down from the summit, the weather turned.
It started to snow.
He picked up the pace to get to lower elevation,
But the snow got heavy, so he decided to set up camp.
Instead of setting 3 tents, they only set 2, so as to keep everybody closer together.
In the am, they went out to a foot of snow.
Their only saving grace was a winter jacket they had found at the summit, and some extra layers the some people had brought.
And people sharing gloves.
My buddy ALWAYS has a sense of humor about him, with a smirk almost always on his face.
His cousin who was with, said he knew they were in trouble when his cousin wasn’t smiling.
My buddy’s wife said that he slept for 2 days afterwards, he was so drained.
Not from the physical strain of the weather. That was old hat to him. Probably would have loved it had he been on his own.
(or at least had everyone properly prepared)
Still talks about it to this day, 15+ years later.
You can still see it in his eyes that that trip SCARED him.
Before I was born, my Mom said it snowed in Rochester, NY one June....back around ‘72, I worked in a machine shop in Rochester - they would have the “Dixie Cup Ice cream guy pass out ice cream whenever the temp reached 90....we got ice cream one day in January....
I went on a camping trip to Colorado - around 1975 I suppose. It was the fourth of July and it snowed. We were from out-of-state on a church trip, and we all (guys and gals) bought pantyhose to give an extra layer of warmth.
I ended up living in Colorado for awhile - not all that unusual for snow in the mountains during the summer.
The Wind River Range also holds lots of great memories. There is a good movie on Netflix - called Wind River. The only movie that I’ve ever watched twice within the same year. And I watched it twice in two weeks!
