The vast majority of Americans, 78 percent, say they're "extremely" or "somewhat" concerned about not having enough money for retirement, according to Northwestern Mutual's 2018 Planning & Progress Study.
And for good reason: A shocking 21 percent of Americans have nothing at all saved for the future, and another 10 percent have less than $5,000 tucked away, the study finds.
That means about a third of Americans have only a few thousand dollars, or less, put away for their golden years.

Government pension. My dad was a post office guy and my mom was a teacher. Their total monthly social security was about $110/month from when they were kids.
Gardening is great in my small backyard. Some herbs, greens, peppers and tomatoes but the Texas heat stunts some of it. Does having the garden reduce the grocery bill? Not really but I wished it did.
Thank you, but who would build it, fill it with soil and go get the seeds? I can barely get out the front door. When the driver comes to take me to medical appointments I need his or her help to exit the house. We have to have everything delivered.
In a climate like Texas a greenhouse probably makes a lot of sense.
I thought about the greenhouse but would have to air condition it for the plants to survive in summer. Would cost more in cooling bills than whatever food could be grown in grocery savings. Commercial growing perhaps.
Let's see...any or all of family, friends, church members come to mind immediately. I'm sure there are other options if I take a moment to think about it.
Its pretty good. Just found out today we need to replace our HVAC system. Fortunately, we have the $7,000 on hand to replace the entire system. Rather not have the expense, but grateful it wont be a financial stress.
*** “I already have almost $3,000 since then and these people don’t even have $5K? How can that possibly be if you’ve worked for 20-30 years?” ***
WTF!? You have Never Heard of DIVORCE?
Definition of Divorce is ... When a Middle aged Man is Stripped of ALL Assets and may incur a LONG TERM support payments.
EVERYTHING goes away except Bills, Payments and any hope of Retirement.
Guess what “SPORT” your Wife’s 401K is HERS and Hers alone... If you are the Husband however... it is 1/2 hers, all property/assets that are Paid For are Hers ... it does get worse or better (depending on which yo are the Husband or the Wife)
Have fun ... sport... been there done that, you have been warned
Marriage is the DUMBEST thing a Man Can Do... or the absolute BEST thing ... depends on what happens 25 years after you say “I DO”
Whatever ... ENJOY
I am divorced. So stop being a schmuck.

Yeah? Well so what?
I am not disagreeing with you. I started an IRA at age 18.
I started putting funds into a 401K @ 22. There were years I maxed out the pretax contribution(18%) and put in 10% post tax contribution to the maximum allowed. Now at age 55 if I get one more double in the next 10 years I should have more than enough to live the rest of my life with plenty left over.
My 401K dropped 50% in value during Obama’s first term. However, I am lucky. Some people are not. Some people lost their jobs during the Great recession. Many had to dip into their retirement just to live. I took a 50% cut in pay. I am a straight commission lumber trader. I had to sell my 1999 Lexus SC400(third car) poor me.
My oldest brother and wife have very little saved for retirement. He and his wife have no pensions. I would think they have well under $100k. Maybe less than $50K. He is 59.
My other brother is a multimillionaire. He has made very good investments. He has a great job and has made a lot of money off of stock options. We joke that he has both his first communion money and his bar mitzvah money. He is 58.
My youngest brother and his wife both work for the federal government. They have been with the justice department bureau of prisons for 28 years. They are all set. He is 51.
We all went to NY state SUNY colleges. We all had virtually no debt when we graduated. We all are married. Only one of us has been divorced(me). None of us has any type of major medical costs that were not covered by health insurance. We are lucky. Yes, people make their own luck. But, SH&T happens.
“student loan debt that the Dems want to forgive”
None of my kids got ‘loans’ to attend college..., BUT,,,,I feel sorry for them as they have to face what the #astar# politicians ( For Decades ) have sent them knowing it is all BULL !
ALl ‘gubmint’ pensions HALVED TODAY !! Save our grandchildren !
Not in the Liberals new vision of America.
I'm the one who earlier tonight ordered the rack of lamb but you brought me the pork chop special instead. I didn't complain at the time (I like pork chops too) and I realize you were working 12 tabletops because Eddie called in sick (again) but just wait until the Yelp review hits the web later tonight.
