I don’t think the “stopping treatment” was McCain’s choice. If he was unconscious and the docs told the family that death was imminent, I think the family would have OK’d pulling the plug (as many families do). So long as Ducey is Governor, he can make the appointment. I don’t think there’s a time limit on him, but with the Kavanaugh confirmation coming up, the Republicans would want someone in McCain’s seat who can cast a vote on that. This confirmation will be a nail-biter. As some have pointed out upthread, a single vote might be the difference between approval, rejection, or a tie. A tie is the Democrats’ and Never Trumpers’ worst case scenario since VP Pence would cast the tie-breaking vote leading to Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Some real high-stakes gamesmanship going on right now.
