The Minoans on Crete did not go away, they just were conquered by the Mycenaean Greeks who were more warlike. A few inscriptions in a non-Greek language (but written in the Greek alphabet) were found in eastern Crete dating from the classical period (the language is referred to as Eteocretan). Presumably they were descended from people who had lived in Crete in the Bronze Age.
