Parents of a fifth grader are concerned after their child was punished for referring to his teacher as "ma'am."
Teretha Wilson said she noticed something was wrong Tuesday when her 10-year old son Tamarion got off the school bus from North East Carolina Preparatory School.
"I asked him what happened. He said he got in trouble for saying 'yes ma'am'," explained Wilson.
Confused by his response, Tamarion pulled out a sheet of paper with the word "ma'am" written on it four times per line on both sides. He says his teacher told him to write the word on the sheet because he kept referring to her as "ma'am" despite her instruction not to. As part of his punishment, Tamarion had to have the paper signed by a parent.
"He had a look on his face of disappointment, shame," said his father, McArthur Bryant.
Wilson and Bryant said their children were taught to refer to elders as "ma'am" and "sir," and that Tamarion was not intending to be disrespectful.
"At the end of the day as a father, to feel kind of responsible for that...knowing that I have been raising him and doing the best that I can, it's not acceptable," said Bryant.
They added that Tamarion was hospitalized last month for a seizure-related activity, which included memory loss and hallucinations, something the teacher was unaware of.
Wilson said the punishment was completed in class. She was concerned that Tamarion was missing an opportunity to work during that time.
During the encounter, Wilson said the teacher also told Tamarion that "if she had something, she would have thrown it at him."
"It wasn't right. It wasn't professional. As a teacher, it wasn't appropriate. And I asked her why she thought it was okay to do that," said Wilson.
Wednesday, Wilson met with the teacher and principal to discuss the incident and punishment. During that meeting, Wilson said the teacher acknowledged saying that, but was not serious and believed Tamarion was aware of that.
When Wilson returned the signed punishment sheet, she also included a second sheet, which included Tamarion writing the definition of the word "ma'am."
Following the meeting, Wilson requested her son be moved to a different classroom, which the principal agreed to do.
While Wilson and Bryant are happy the school took action, they want to make sure a future incident doesn't happen again.
"If it happened to my son, I'm pretty sure if not a week, a day, a month, a year, it will occur to somebody else's child," said Bryant.
A family member posted a picture of Tamarion's sheet full of "ma'am" on Facebook Wednesday afternoon. It has since received more than 1,000 comments, and hundreds of shares and reactions.
This is Tamarion's second year at North East Carolina Preparatory School, and Wilson said the teacher has several years of experience.
An official with the school released a short statement regarding the handling of the incident:
"This is a personnel matter which has been handled appropriately by the K-7 principal."
And that Pic is from when ?
The 3rd or 4th Century BC ?
This teacher is unfit to be around children.
How about: YO, B!TCH ?
Well, apparently this school has no where to go but up. It's improving from an F rating a few years and, and has set its sights on making up to C level. This is Dr. William's first year there, according to the article.
With that administrative PhD of hers, she ought to bring improvement. /S
I don’t understand this one. Was the teacher a transman?
Without the name of the teacher, B’ouch is all we can call her. Got to get the spelling right.
Which means she’s tenured, and can’t be fired, short of standing in front of the class, eating one of the children alive. Not tenured? Still will take some doing, and if successful, she’ll sue the school district for everything its worth, and most likely win. Yeah, I’m way too cynical, I know.
I’ll bet money this teacher isn’t from the South- where we still teach our children manners.
In recent years for some reason that word has been a “trigger” word for feminists. Just more proof they are completely batpoop crazy.
This article explains how at least one came to realize it was just a term of respect. Interesting how this woman thought she was supposed to be offended by being addressed as Ma’am.
It is truly crazy out there.

Adults should NEVER use sarcasm on children, anyway. Their brains are still being “wired”, and sarcasm sends mixed signals. Adults love to use sarcasm, because we find it witty, and hitting a bullseye, but some studies show that sarcasm can be a factor in the development of schizophrenia. I would think a teacher, who had to have had at least one college course on Human Growth and Development, would know that. (Though Lord only knows what such a course looks like in this gender bending culture) And I’m not being sarcastic.
Oh she definitely has no business teaching. Absolutely needs to be fired.
And older ladies, are addressed as Miz, as in, Miz Jones, no matter their marital status. And I DON’T mean Ms.
I was raised to refer to adults that were not family as Ma’am or Sir as respect. If they were adults we knew then Mr. or Mrs. so and so was also acceptable.
At SCHOOL...in an English class we were taught that it was rude if you didn’t use Ma’am or Sir, because otherwise you were showing a familiarity that did not exist.
We were not expected to say Ma’am or Sir to adults we were close to IF it was acceptable to them and even then if they were correcting you about something you needed to show respect for them and use the respectful terms while getting your correction.
Not that I read.
I really dont think its necessary for public schools (and colleges) to hire so many mental defectives
“I paid so much to get it”.
Any rudeness when someone holds a door is ridiculous. I do not expect men or anyone to hold a door for me...but most people do. I hold a door for others; if I am there, have already opened it- why not? I appreciate it when done for me and have no issue doing it for someone else.
I have seen feminists make smart remarks or otherwise insult men for holding the door for them. I have news for those women, everyone with any sense that sees that just thinks they are an ignorant fool.
Shoulda known better than to use the “M” word
Except a Senator should have enough knowledge of the military to know that the military expects men to address civilian women as Ma’am. That is correct by military standards. I am sure she had no clue.
I would have thought the School by that name would have guaranteed at least a “C” rating.
