They did, but they really managed to capture the petty selfishness and vileness of the character.

Lost in space is one of the few reboots that I actually think they did a good job. I was scared that when they chose to make one of the daughters black it would be really bad but there was a good explanation for the girl being black the oldest daughter was from a previous marriage the best part was it is not a major part of the story and is only occasionally referd to in the series because it is not a major plot point in the series.

I was also blown away by posey parker killing it as a very deceptively evil dr. smith. I hated her character so much I almost stopped watching. couldn't stand the way the rest of the cast was so blind to her and what she was doing.
