As a kid I “Took it to the track” and immediately got cock-blocked by my lack of about $25,000 in “Regulation” modifications to my car that were required to play.
So I went back to the rural backroads of New England.
These tracks do exist, sure but they aren’t the same at all.
It’s like saying that you really, really want to do a Hogan’s Alley but your friends say “Just go to the range”. It’s not the same and the range has an RSO eyeballing you constantly and then tapping on your shoulder every minute to offer his opinion.
Feh. Sanctioning takes it too far.

Everything you said: TRUE.
We got a “run what ya brung” track here for 2 years. Very fun. Safety equipment was based on your times. Even my 420 hp Mustang was good without safety equipment but my father-in-law’s 800 hp S-10 required full equipment.
There were serious racers too (like the FIL) but the track alternated all day between the two so everyone had a good time.
Then, one guy started complaining about noise and it got shut down.
Ha, I did the same. In addition to no roll cage I removed the seat belts, because I never used them. Didn’t occur to me the track would care lol
